Every year on August 26 the world celebrates International Dog Day. The day aims to encourage people to adopt dogs who desperately need a loving family, and to help rescue dogs suffering from abuse and neglect. International Dog Day first began in the US, when it was started by Pet & Family Lifestyle Expert Colleen Paige.
The date August 26, 2004 holds special significance for the founder of International Dog Day.
The National Dog Day website explains: "The date of August 26th is significant, as it's the date that Colleen's family adopted her first dog "Sheltie" from the local animal shelter, when Colleen was 10 years old."
The website adds: "National Dog Day celebrate all dogs, mixed breed and pure.

How to celebrate International Dog Day
There are many ways you can celebrate International Dog Day this year.
If you think you can provide a loving and safe home for a dog, you may even consider adopting a dog from an animal shelter.
If you don't think you can commit to looking after a dog full-time, why not sponsor a dog, such as with the Dogs Trust charity?
Alternatively you can make a donation to an animal charity, such as the RSPCA or the Blue Cross.
And if you already have a dog of your own, why not make today extra special for them?
You know what makes your dog happy better than anybody, but they are sure to enjoy a walk with their favourite humans, a game of ball or a special treat!
