Autumn Equinox 2020: Quotes To Share On First Day Of Fall - International Business Times

The autumnal equinox, also called the September equinox, falls Sept. 22 this year. It marks the beginning of fall season in the Northern Hemisphere and spring season in the Southern Hemisphere.

The word “equinox” comes from Latin words aequus, meaning “equal,” and nox, meaning “night.” On the equinox, day and night are roughly equal in length. This event occurs twice per year — the spring equinox in March and the fall equinox in September. The solstices — one during summer, another during winter — are the counterparts of the equinox.

The astronomical autumn will end Dec. 21 with the winter solstice.

Here are some quotes, courtesy Good Reads, to mark the first day of autumn:

4. "There is a harmony in autumn, and a lustre in its sky, which through the summer is not heard or seen, as if it could not be, as if it had not been!" ― Percy Bysshe Shelley

5. "But when fall comes, kicking summer out on its treacherous a-- as it always does one day sometime after the midpoint of September, it stays awhile like an old friend that you have missed. It settles in the way an old friend will settle into your favorite chair and take out his pipe and light it and then fill the afternoon with stories of places he has been and things he has done since last he saw you." — Stephen King

6. “I loved autumn, the one season of the year that God seemed to have put there just for the beauty of it.” ― Lee Maynard

7. "The season for enjoying the fullness of life ― partaking of the harvest, sharing the harvest with others, and reinvesting and saving portions of the harvest for yet another season of growth." ― Denis Waitley

8. “Wild is the music of autumnal winds / Amongst the faded woods.” ― William Wordsworth

9. “It’s fall coming, I thought, I can smell that sour-molasses smell of silage, clanging the air like a bell – smell like somebody’s been burning oak leaves, left them to smolder overnight because they’re too green.” ― Ken Kesey

10. "You will never be alone, you hear so deep / a sound when autumn comes." — William Stafford
