Today is the 94th birth anniversary of the late eminent Indian playback singer, lyricist and musician Bhupen Hazarika, who is still popular among music lovers in Bangladesh.

He conquered hearts of thousands in Bangladesh rendering timeless songs including Manush manusher jonyo, Ami ek jajabar, Amra korbo joy, Bistirno parore, O nadire and others.

Bhupen Hazarika was born on September 8, 1926 to Nilakanta and Shantipriya Hazarika in Sadiya, Assam, British India.

He sang two songs in noted lyricist, playwright and the first Assamese filmmaker Jyotiprasad Agarwala directed Indramalati (1939) at the age of 12 and wrote his first song, Agnijugor firingoti moi at the age of 13.

Bhupen Hazarika had written many songs based on the themes of communal amity, universal justice and empathy in Assamese language that were translated into Bangla, Hindi and others.

He was posthumously awarded both the Padma Vibhushan, India’s second-highest civilian award, in 2012, and the Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian award, in 2019.

He passed away on November 5, 2011.
