Killer whale that carried her dead calf for 17 days in 2018, seen swimming with new calf: Videos - PennLive

The killer whale who swam carrying her dead calf for 17 days, in an apparent act of grieving, is a mother again, according to CTV News.

Tahlequah, known to researchers as J35, gave birth to a calf last week, according to a Sept. 6 news release from the Center for Whale Research.

Mom and calf were both spotted swimming near their pod (J pod) in the eastern Strait of Juan de Fuca, between Washington state and Vancouver Island, Canada, over the weekend, the release said.

The Center for Whale Research stated “She (J35) made world news in the summer of 2018 when she carried her dead calf on her head for 17 days while the J pod traveled about 1,000 miles around the Salish Sea on what we termed a ‘Tour of Grief.’” The calf had died a few hours after birth, but the mother prevented it from sinking for more than two weeks.

The center’s statement went on to say, “Her new calf appeared healthy and precocious, swimming vigorously alongside its mother in its second day of free-swimming life. We know that it was not born today because its dorsal fin was upright, and we know that it takes a day or two to straighten after being bent over in the womb, so we assign its birthday as Sept. 4, 2020. (Ergo gestation commenced in February 2019). Tahlequah was mostly separate from the other whales and being very evasive as she crossed the border into Canada.”

With the birth of J57, the endangered Southern Resident orca population is now 73, according to the Center for Whale Research.
