“Our ancestors lived in this village 1,000 years ago. There were disasters then, too. Each time the people stayed. They rebuilt and stayed. Rebuilt and stayed. I feel an obligation to continue what my ancestors started. I don’t want to lose my hometown.”

NAOSHI SATO, 87, a lumberjack and farmer and one of only a handful of residents of the Japanese village of Kesen, which was hit by a tsunami 10 years ago that killed more than 200 residents, including his son, and destroyed all but two of the 550 homes.
