20 Best Thor Quotes: Funny & Inspirational Lines From Chris Hemsworth's Hero - The Direct

Thor was one of the first MCU heroes to get his own movie, and he'll soon be the first to have a fourth solo film. Chris Hemsworth has played the character over seven movies thus far, and his story has gone from epic family drama to wacky, zany road trip with everything in between. Of course, he's also one of the original six Avengers, and one of three members of that elite squad that are still in the MCU to this day.

It hasn't all been sunshine and rainbows, though, as the last time fans saw Thor he was just starting to get over a deep depression and headed into space with the Guardians of the Galaxy, where his story will likely pick up in the upcoming Thor: Love and Thunder.

The God of Thunder has been through a lot in the MCU so far, and here are 20 of his best quotes to showcase his journey since the first Thor movie was released in 2011.

Thor's Best MCU Lines

1. “You are a vain, greedy, cruel boy.”

“And you are an old man and a fool!” (Thor)

Thor Quote
Marvel

Odin may be able to sum up Thor’s faults in this scene, but Thor is able to throw it right back at him. Odin may banish him to Earth in this movie, but, well, Thor soon becomes an Avenger, so who’s the real winner here?

2. "Brother, whatever I have done to wrong you, whatever I have done to lead you to do this, I am truly sorry. But these people are innocent, taking their lives will gain you nothing. So take mine, and end this." (Thor)

Thor’s first major act of selflessness in the MCU comes when he requests Loki kill him to save his friends from Earth and Asgard alike. It’s a moment that’s emotionally charged, even more so considering this is his own brother he’s up against.

3. “Your ancestors called it magic, and you call it science. Well, I come from a place where they’re one and the same thing.” (Thor)

Thor Quote Jane Foster
Marvel

This quote reveals that all magic in the MCU is actually science of some kind that can’t be explained by the knowledge of the beings at the center of the given story (usually humans on Earth). Neat!

4. "Loki, I thought the world of you. I thought we were gonna fight side by side forever, but at the end of the day, you're you and I'm me, and... I don't know, maybe there's still good in you, but let's be honest – our paths diverged a long time ago." (Thor: Ragnarok)

This scene is overall lighthearted in tone, but this is actually a fairly sad moment in which Thor accepts his dream of working with Loki is all but dead and it just isn’t going to happen the way he wants it to. It’s almost like he’s saying goodbye to him.

5. "What more could I lose?" (Avengers: Infinity War)

Thor Quote Infinity War
Marvel

Oh, the cruel irony of this moment. It comes after Thor has lost his entire family, but before he loses to Thanos in Wakanda and hits his lowest point yet. He’s still upbeat here, but it hurts to watch knowing just how low he’ll soon sink.

6. "Bring me Thanos!" (Avengers: Infinity War)

This is a simple line, but a now-famous battle cry from Thor upon his epic arrival in Wakanda.

7. “I went for the head…” (Avengers: Endgame)

Thor Quote Endgame
Marvel

Thanos told Thor he “should have gone for the head” in Avengers: Infinity War and that’s exactly what he does at the beginning of Avengers: Endgame…only to realize that this revenge isn’t enough to bring everyone who was snapped away back.

Thor's Funniest Moments

8. Thor: "I need a horse!"

Store Owner: "We don't have horses. Just dogs, cats, birds."

Thor: "Then give me one of those large enough to ride." (Thor)

Thor Horse Quote
Marvel

Oh, Thor. While Earthlings may not know that magic and science are the same, it looks like you have a few things to learn as well, like how small household pets don’t come in sizes large enough to ride.

9. Bruce Banner: "I don't think we should be focusing on Loki. That guy's brain is a bag full of cats. You can smell crazy on him."

Thor: "Have a care how you speak! Loki is beyond reason, but he is of Asgard and he is my brother."

Natasha Romanoff: "He killed 80 people in two days."

Thor: "He's adopted." (The Avengers)

Thor is willing to defend his brother to a certain extent, but even he has to relent at a certain point, and that point seems to be killing eighty people in two days.

10. "You people are so petty, and tiny." (The Avengers)

Thor The Avengers Quote
Marvel

This quote is fun because, as the Avengers are just forming, it’s clear Thor looks down on them. But he soon gets involved in the shenanigans and drama as well and forms a bond with his teammates.

11. “I make grave mistakes all the time. Everything seems to work out.” (Thor: Ragnarok)

This is said in jest, but is actually true for Thor for the most part, and it's a good way to look at life. Despite the bad things we have done and mistakes we have made, we are all still alive and living.

12. "Hey, hey! We know each other! He's a friend from work! Where have you been? Everybody thought you were dead! So much has happened since I last saw you. I lost my hammer...like, yesterday so that's still pretty fresh. Loki, Loki's alive! Can you believe it? He's up there. Loki! Look who it is!" (Thor: Ragnarok)

Thor Ragnarok Hulk Quote
Marvel

One of Thor’s most famous quotes, the “friend from work” line in reference to the Hulk, was actually suggested by a child visiting the Thor: Ragnarok set the day it was filmed!

13. "My God, you're a Valkyrie... You know, I used to want to be a Valkyrie when I was younger, until I found out you were all women. There's nothing wrong with women, of course, I love women. Sometimes a little too much. Not in a creepy way, just more like a respectful appreciation. I think it's great, an elite force of women warriors. It's about time." (Thor: Ragnarok)

A sweet, if a little awkward, moment from Thor, that also provides insight into the Valkyries and what amazing warriors they are.

Inspirational Quotes from Thor Odinson

14. Thor: "You know, I had it all backwards. I had it all wrong."

Selvig: "It's not a bad thing finding out that you don't have all the answers. You start asking the right questions."

Thor: "For the first time in my life, I have no idea what I'm supposed to do."

Selvig: "Anyone who's ever going to find his way in this world, has to start by admitting he doesn't know..." (Thor)

Thor Erik Selvigg Quote
Marvel

Thor gets some wise advice from Dr. Erik Selvig here, but his realization that he has no path for the first time in his life is something many people can relate to. Gods, they’re just like us!

15. “I will protect Asgard and all the realms with my last and every breath, but I cannot do so from that chair. Loki for all his grave imbalance understood rule as I know I never will. The brutality, the sacrifice, it changes you. I’d rather be a good man than a great king.” (Thor: The Dark World)

A wise quote from the God of Thunder, indeed. It also shows the early signs of Thor’s doubts about his own abilities to lead and his reluctance to be a ruler.

16. "I choose to run towards my problems, and not away from them. Because that’s– because that’s what heroes do." (Thor: Ragnarok)

Thor Ragnarok Quote
Marvel

This is spoken as a throwaway line, but it’s another quote that is true to Thor’s character. He’s definitely not one to shy away from conflict and typically dives into battle head-on!

17. "Oh dear brother, you're becoming predictable. I trust you, you betray me and round and round in circles we go. See, Loki, life is about growth and change. But you just seem to want to stay the same. I guess what I'm trying to say is that you'll always be the God of Mischief. But you could be more." (Thor: Ragnarok)

This comes later in the same scene and expresses a similar sentiment, though it does go deeper into the way the relationship between Thor and Loki operates. The last few sentences do seem to inspire Loki to reconnect with his brother, though, or at least join him in battle to save the people of Asgard.

18. “Asgard’s not a place, it’s a people.” (Thor: Ragnarok)

Thor Ragnarok Asgard Quote
Marvel

At this moment, Thor realizes that Ragnarok is inevitable and harkens back to the words of his late father, understanding that the goal should be to save the citizens of Asgard, not the land itself.

19. Eitri: "You understand boy, you are taking on a star? It will kill you."

Thor: "Only if I die." (Avengers: Infinity War)

Thor’s stubbornness and will to survive anything - as he expresses to Eitri - is an asset here, and results in the formation of his new hammer, Stormbreaker, which he then uses in battle once he, Groot, and Rocket blast into Wakanda.

20. "I'm still worthy." (Avengers: Endgame)

Thor Quote Endgame Worthy
Marvel

After falling into a five-year depression, Thor is worried he will no longer be able to wield Mjolnir given the chance when he returns to 2013, back when his original hammer still existed. To his relief, it soon arrives in his hand, making him realize that despite being at such a low point for so long, he never lost his worthiness.
