A FORMER addict has revealed the real story behind a photo taken after she overdosed.
Emma Sturgeon, 23, from Nashville, US, was left in hospital after overdosing but has now been “clean and sober” for around six months, The Sun reports.
She took to Reddit to share a snap of her lying in her hospital bed, shown next to her today; fit, healthy and smiling.
Emma’s transformation post soon went viral and she went on to reveal the story about her addiction to both Adderall (an “upper”) and alcohol.
The young woman had previously been prescribed the Adderall for ADHD when she was in high school but, within a year, she became addicted.
She began taking double doses and kept upping it until she eventually was taking a month’s worth in a couple of days.
She told Women’s Health US, “Eventually, I was snorting it in the bathroom of my high school. And I knew it wasn’t good, but I couldn’t stop.”
Adderall is an oral medication — but crushing and snorting it makes the effect kick in “faster and stronger”, according to Emma.
She began spending money her parents gave her for food on the drug and even stole from her family.
It was when Emma was 20 that she overdosed on drugs so badly, she landed herself in the hospital and was put in an induced coma.
On that day, Emma had been left raging after a guy she had met on Tinder hadn’t texted her back.
She went on to reveal that she was so angry that she decided to “party” and proceeded to drive while swigging from a large whiskey bottle hidden in a paper bag.
She then went “bar-hopping” with a guy she had only just met.
Emma added: “I had taken at least half of a 30-day prescription of Adderall that day, plus chugged a lot of alcohol, and I was on the verge of losing it — fading in and out, right on the line of unconsciousness.
“I remember very little about the remainder of that night. The next thing I knew, it was three weeks later. I woke up in a hospital bed.
“The entire experience feels hazy because of the state I was in, but I have this fleeting memory of being wheeled into the emergency department on a stretcher.”
Thankfully, since her overdose, Emma has “learned to live” her life without drugs.
She attended a rehab centre for six months in Colorado and it got her off the “uppers”.
She went on to realise that she “cannot drink like a normal person” and now attends AA meetings every Wednesday.
Emma is now a full-time nursing student and feels better than she has in a long time.
Emma added: “My relationship with my family is so good. That’s one of the biggest blessings of my sobriety — I got my family back.
“I’m still that addict, and I could slip back into that way of living so easily if I don’t work on my recovery every day.”
