“It’s not at all that we have too short a time to live, but that we squander a great deal of it. Life is long, and it is given in sufficient measure to do many great things if we live it well…. we don’t receive a short life, we make it so.” — Seneca, On the Brevity of Life
I’m 66 years old. Two hundred years ago I would have been the rarest of rare. Today, while I’m still normally the oldest person in the room, my age is not something of a novelty. Thankfully.
Seneca says “if we live it well” when he talks about our life. I’ve walked on desert sands in Saudi Arabia, I’ve seen sunsets and sunrises over the Serengeti, I’ve taken motorized dugouts up the Mekong river, I’ve gone into the great pyramids, trailed a pride of lions to their kill, I’ve watched armies prepare and go to war with each other. I’ve seen much, felt much, done much in my 66 years.
I’ve lived long enough to have lost many of the people that were close to me. Because He died for me yesterday I know that I’ll see them again. That said I still have many people in my life here and now that I love and I cherish seeing as often as I can.
Today is the last day of quail season. My youngest son is home from university to go into the field with me. As I write this I’m sitting in my recliner wearing my briar pants. After I finish this I’ll go get the shotguns and load them into the truck. At the end of the day, I’ll be leg-weary and sore and exhausted. And I’ll no doubt have some stories to tell my wife when we get home. Spending these days with my children counts for more … much much more than anything I’ve done or seen in life. He gave us our life to live it well. I hope that in His eyes I have.
Bless you all, have a safe Easter. Tomorrow, He rises.
