Long-serving Karambunai assemblyman Jainab Ahmad Ayid says she can better serve her current seat than anywhere else.
KOTA KINABALU: Barisan Nasional’s Karambunai assemblyman Jainab Ahmad Ayid hopes to remain in her present constituency, amid speculation that she could be moved to her hometown in Tawau.
The Sabah Wanita Umno deputy chief says although she was born in Tawau, she is better known in Karambunai, where she has served for three terms
“People in Tawau don’t actually know me,” she told reporters today. “Besides, they already have capable leaders.”
But Jainab, who is Sabah’s community development and consumer affairs minister, said the decision was ultimately left to Prime Minister Najib Razak and Sabah Chief Minister Musa Aman.
“The PM and CM know who is a winnable candidate. Surely, they must have a discussion about candidates first, so I will let them be,” she said.
Jainab brushed off the speculation on her move, calling it all “just talk”.
“It’s not that I don’t want to stand in Tawau. Logic dictates that if I had wanted to be in Tawau, I would have been chosen to be a candidate there since the first time I stood for election,” she said referring to the 2004 general election.
Jainab said she had been contributing much to the development of Karambunai, adding the “proof is out there for everyone, including the Barisan Nasional leadership, to see”.
Asked if she’s a more winnable candidate in Karambunai rather than in Tawau, she said: “It’s not for me to say that I’m a winnable candidate, it’s for the leadership.”
Karambunai, alongside the Inanam state seat which is held by PKR’s Roland Chia, come under the Sepanggar parliamentary constituency.
In 2013, Jainab won with a 8,532-vote majority against her closest rival from PKR, more than double what she garnered in the previous general election.
