LA Fitness has reportedly fired a manager and two employees from a New Jersey gym where two black men claim they were “racially profiled” after an online video of the incident that involved the cops went viral.
An employee for LA Fitness in Secaucus told NJ.com Wednesday that the gym manager seen in the clip, which was filmed by one of the men, had been axed along with two other workers.
The firings came after one of the men involved, Tshyrad Oates, posted a video to Facebook showing the Oates and his pal standing in the gym surrounded by police who were called to the scene by gym workers.
“You kicked me out the gym for no reason,” Oates’ friend, who was not identified, can be heard saying in one of a series of four clips.
“I’ve been having multiple problems with this club. I was asked to scan in again for no reason,” the man says. “I’ve been a member here for at least eight years.”
According to a post Oates made, Oates had signed into the gym using a four-day guest pass to work out with his friend who was already at the gym.
“After about a half hour I was approached by this same employee telling me that I had to leave or pay and I explained to her that I just signed in with her with the guest pass. She stated that it was my friend who did not pay (unaware that her manager had already signed him in with his membership pass),” Oates said in his post.
“My friend stated to her that he is an active and current member and that his gym tag was in his locker. He felt racially profiled and embarrassed by the harassment of this La Fitness employee in front of other members at the gym.”
As the two men continued to work-out, police officers showed up and started to question them about their memberships.
“We explained to them about our guest pass and rescanned my friend’s member tag and it resulted in current active statues,” Oates wrote.
“We again started our workout and 10 [minutes] later an LA Fitness manager told us to leave, we stated that we did not do anything wrong and have active current memberships,” Oates wrote.
Moments later, Oates wrote, that five police officers were on the scene and asked the men to leave.
“This La Fitness manager who refused to give us his reason to kicking us out, and refused to give us his name stated that I was banned from the gym and my friend’s gym membership has been terminated effective immediately,” Oates wrote.
LA Fitness did not immediately return a request for comment by The Post.
