On a day when Georgia fans got to see football in Sanford Stadium and see 5-star quarterback Justin Fields, it was Nick Chubb and Sony Michel who somehow stole the show.
The two former Georgia running backs were back in Athens for spring game festivities before being selected this week by their new teams in the NFL draft. Instead of dressing in some flashy new shirt or a generic Georgia polo shirt, the two were wearing jerseys, something that isn’t all that uncommon during senior picture season at the University of Georgia.
But what made Saturday special was that Chubb wore Michel’s No. 1 jersey while Michel donned Chubb’s iconic No. 27. It was a moment that made a lot of Georgia fans really happy. Two friends sharing a special moment in a very special place for one last time.
Chubb said that he first posed the idea of the jersey swap to Michel and that his running mate said it was a good idea.
“It was a ton of fun and it’s something I’m always going to remember,” Chubb said on the moment.

Given that both running backs figure to be high draft picks, Michel being mentioned as a possible first-rounder while Chubb figures to go in either the second or third rounds on Friday night, Saturday represented the last chance that the two will get to wear a jersey for the same team.
“It’ll probably be the last time we’re on the same field together for a long time so it was definitely fun,” Chubb said.
Like many other college seniors in the coming weeks, these friends will move to different cities and start new jobs. But that doesn’t mean the bond these two built in their four years in Athens will cease to exist. Even as the two have been going through the NFL draft process and essentially vying for the same job and competitive pay, the two have kept in touch and helped make the rigorous draft process easier for each other.
“Just having a guy that I’ve known really well for four years and just going through the process together,” Chubb said of Michel. “It’s a blessing and it’s really been going through it all with him.”
The two both had stellar college careers as they finished second and third in school history in rushing yards. They both had monster performances in the Rose Bowl, with Chubb scoring the game-tying touchdown in regulation and Michel then scoring the game-winner in what was the most memorable Georgia football win of the 21st century.

So it’s only fitting that these two got to create one last special memory in Athens. For the many Georgia fans and admirers they’ve picked up over the years and for each other.
Chubb will be in Dallas this week working with Panini America, the exclusive trading card partner of the NFL and NFLPA. As soon as Chubb is drafted, Panini will be creating his first-ever NFL trading card which will be available on icolletcpanini.com within hours of the draft.
