NYPD on alert about viral threats on so-called 'Punish a Muslim Day'

A viral campaign has some fearing for the safety of Muslims in New York.

A letter sent to homes in the U.K. and circulating on social media in the United States says tomorrow, April 3, is "Punish a Muslim Day."

It encourages people to verbally and physically assault Muslims.

At a news conference today in Brooklyn, officials pledged to increase police surveillance in predominantly Muslim neighborhoods and mosques.

"The hopes of the person who wrote this was to create an atmosphere where you can harm someone because of their religious belief," said Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams.

Police in the U.K. are still looking for whoever wrote this letter.

Here in New York, police say there are no known threats, but urge people to be vigilant.
