Quote of the Day: Monday!

Monday: the designated day for bemoaning one’s fate of having to return to work and wash off the weekend. Acknowledged by many as the worst day of the week and easily blamed for a multitude of largely first-world ailments that occur on any given day but if it happens on Monday it’s clearly the day’s fault and a curse.

The quote below is attributed to Hoot, a character in the movie Black Hawk Down. Hoot is a conglomeration of about a dozen different guys in the mythic Delta Force (so I am told). Black Hawk Down is based on a true story about the Battle of Mogadishu that occurred on October 3, 1993. Hoot and about 160 special operations soldiers, after intending to execute a planned 90-minute mission, spent an entire night fighting the whole city of Mogadishu over the better part of 17 hours.

Astonishingly, at the end of the fight, a handful of American soldiers, including Hoot, had to actually run out of the city on foot as they were being left behind by the rescue vehicles. Even more astonishing is that they all made it. This run is now famous among the military community colloquially known as the Mogadishu Mile and memorialized every October in Fort Benning, GA.

The movie portrays the surrealistic end of that run as they enter the stadium with locals now cheering them, Arab men in pristine robes politely serving them water and food. The stadium is filled with US survivors and also housing 18 dead and 73 wounded SOF soldiers.

In one of the final scenes at the stadium, Hoot, still filthy and beat up from the fighting, is eating some food and loading magazines preparing to go back into the city because “there’s still men out there,” referring to a second Blackhawk helicopter that had been shot down. He starts heading for the gate to re-enter the living nightmare that is Mogadishu and looks back and enthusiastically says:

“Hey, we started a whole new week! It’s Monday!”

It is only a movie line but I cannot like it enough. Oh to have this spirit each and every day. It bellows out optimism, opportunity, attitude, what can be, heart and soul, and ultimately hope despite one’s circumstances.

Happy Monday, Ricochet.
