Shortly after his team survived with a 4-3 overtime win over Columbus on Saturday night, Washington Capitals forward Brett Connolly was still looking for gifts to give six-year-old Keelan Moxley. She became a viral sensation earlier this week after Connolly threw her a puck into the stands, and on Saturday night he was asking his teammates in the locker room to sign a skate for Keelan.
Connolly had already signed a stick for the young fan before the game, when she met Washington owner Ted Leonsis and led the “Let’s Go Caps!” chant throughout the game.
Keelan sat with her mother, Lauren Moxley, in section 204 before the game, clutching the puck that had made her something of an Internet celebrity before Game 2.
“She is convinced that she is famous,” Lauren said of her daughter.
Connolly had tried to throw puck over the stands to Moxley twice, but both were intercepted given to boys near her behind the glass. The third puck Connolly tossed her way reached Keelan, who plays youth hockey in Bowie.
The NHL would later call it the most streamed league video on Twitter of all time. Leonsis invited the Moxley family, which hails from Chesapeake Beach, Md., to meet with him and attend Saturday’s Game 5. Afterward, Keelan rehearsed her “Let’s Go Caps!” chant, each of which were broadcast on the arena’s video board during the game. Some red-clad fans pointed and smiled at six-year old as they made their way to their seats.
‘“I’m so excited! If I were a bomb I would explode!” she screamed shortly before the game began.
It had already been a life-changing week for Lauren, whose phone has been continuously blowing up with media requests. She had planned earlier this month to watch Game 5 at home with her family — she only makes a few games a year — but those plans changed when she took her daughter down to the glass to watch pregame warm-ups last weekend. When Connolly approached, everything changed.
“Everything exploded from there,” she said. “It’s been a little crazy. But it’s been exciting.”
