DPS refutes sexual assault claims in viral social media post

ELLIS COUNTY, Texas (KWTX) The Department of Public Safety is refuting claims in a viral social media post that a state trooper sexually assaulted a woman arrested after a traffic stop early Sunday morning on Interstate 35.

New York-based activist and writer Shaun King posted to Twitter that Sherita Dixon Cole was pulled over on suspicion of driving while intoxicated at around 1:30 a.m. Sunday by a DPS trooper in Waxahachie near what he called an "abandoned car dealership" near Interstate 35 and U.S. Highway 287.

He claimed that although she passed field sobriety tests, she was arrested because the trooper "didn't like her attitude."

King claimed that the trooper sexually assaulted Cole and threatened to shoot her fiancée, who had arrived at the scene of the traffic stop in response to a phone call from Cole.

DPS issued a statement later in the day refuting the claims.

"Upon learning of the allegations today, the department immediately took action to review the dash cam video. The video shows absolutely no evidence to support the serious accusations against the trooper during the DWI arrest of the suspect. DPS will present the video to the DA’s Office to determine if any further action is needed. The department will release the video to the public if there are no objections by the DA’s Office."

Cole was booked into the Wayne McCollum Detention Center in Waxahachie, but her name did not appear on the jail's online roster Monday.
