Photo of thankful dog rescued from euthanasia list goes viral

(Courtesy: Schenley Hutson Kirk, HOUND Rescue and Sanctuary)

Gregory the beagle was set to be euthanized at Franklin County Dog Shelter. That was until his rescuer, Joe Kirk, came in and saved the day.

Kirk works at HOUND Rescue and Sanctuary in Findlay, Ohio, a non-profit rescue group for dogs that need homes.

Kirk took the two hour trip down to Central Ohio to pick up Gregory, and save him from the euthanasia list. Once he had adopted Gregory, he took the beagle on his "freedom ride," which is the dog's car ride away from the shelter, and to a pet rescue group, sanctuary, or "furever" home.

During Gregory's freedom ride, he clung to Kirk, as if he was thanking him for rescuing him from the euthanasia list, and doggy death row.

Kirk's wife uploaded the now viral photo of her husband and Gregory, onto her Facebook page with the following caption:

The BEST Freedom Ride Picture EVER! Pulled from the Euthanasia List at FCDS today by HOUND Rescue and Sanctuary, "Gregory" is one thankful and appreciative Beagle! He KNOWS he is SAFE!

At HOUND Rescue and Sanctuary, Gregory can live without the threat of euthanasia until he's adopted.

Upon arrival at the pet sanctuary, it was discovered that Gregory has heartworms. Once he's cleared by the vet, he'll be available for adoption to be placed in his "FURever" home.
