Community rallies behind local baby born four months early
GRANDVIEW, Wash. -- “It was scary, because the odds of a baby being born that young, they don’t have a good chance of survival,” said new mom Courtney Pearson.
Her son, Braxton Pearson made his entrance into the world months four months, too soon.
“He was born at 23 weeks, five days. Way too early, and he’s just hit every bump in the road that he possibly could, with all the sickness and infections and everything,” said Courtney.
Courtney said her pregnancy was going smoothly, until doctors told her she had an incompetent cervix that couldn’t support the pressure of holding a baby.
Born a little over a month ago in June, Braxton’s mom says he’s battled meningitis, a brain bleed, and lung problems.
With this long list of medical issues, Courtney says the hospital bills have been adding up, quickly.
Cue April and Leo Burris, the owners of Stir Crazy, a Grandview coffee shop, and Courtney’s previous employer.
“Courtney and I have become very close. She’s kind of like an adopted daughter of mine, and we’ve kinda been through a lot together, and when this happened, I just decided that I needed to do whatever I could to help her and Lane out,” said Burris.
Today, the Burris’ are giving a large chunk of Stir Crazy’s sales to the Pearsons. April says after sales tax and the cost of supplies, the remainder of the money will go straight to Braxton’s medical bills.
Courtney says she and her husband lane are overwhelmed with how the community has rallied behind Baby Braxton, and she looks forward to the day she gets to bring him home.
“It’s very hard to have a kid that’s born so early, and have to stay in the hospital, and go home every day without him, and dealing with all the new medical terms that we know nothing about, but we’re learning something every day, and he’s growing stronger, every day.
Stir Crazy says they’ll continue to raise money for Braxton, even after today. You can stop by their coffee shop in Grandview to make donations at 915 N. 4th St.
