A day after announcing that a batch of mosquitoes in Nashville tested positive for West Nile virus, public health officials confirmed that one human case of the viral infection has been confirmed.
According to the Metro Public Health Department, the individual had traveled outside Tennessee before becoming ill, and it's possible the virus was contracted while traveling.
Mosquitoes trapped in North Nashville by the intersection of Buchanan Street and D.B. Todd Boulevard, however, have tested positive for the virus.
The health department's pest management staff visited the neighborhood Wednesday to pass out educational materials on mosquito protection and prevention and to monitor standing water for mosquito larvae.
Staff also plan to apply a larvicide to any areas where larvae are present, but have no plans to spray to kill adult mosquitoes.
The health department began trapping mosquitoes across Davidson County in early May, sending the insects to the Tennessee Department of Health's laboratory for testing.
Residents in Davidson County experiencing mosquito problems can call the health department at 615-340-5660 to arrange to have a pest management staff member inspect their property, provide mosquito control and advice, and apply larvicide if needed.
