Parents of SVSU student go viral with empty nest post

SAGINAW COUNTY, MI (WNEM) -

The day the parents of a Saginaw Valley State University student dropped their son off, they went back home to an empty nest.

Their empty nest has now generated 15-minutes of internet fame.

“They were like, ‘Cameron, I think I’ve gone viral.’ And I was like, ‘no way,’” said Cameron Piper, SVSU student.

He is a freshman football player at SVSU. After his parents Vicky and Jeff dropped him off at SVSU earlier this month, they posted a photo that received more than 150,000 likes. The photo has been picked up by dozens of national media outlets.

Piper said the empty nest they created for the photo was a spur of the moment thing.

“They just found a nest on the side of the church and then we had like boards from like church and we just picked them up and they just wrote ‘empty nest 2018,’” Piper said.

He said he is happy about the post.

“Every parent’s dream is for their kids to do more in life than they did. So that’s what my parents always told me as a kid, ‘do more than I did as a kid and be the best that you can be,’” Piper said.

Piper is a defensive lineman on the Cardinal football team. So far his teammates haven’t said much about the picture.

“They don’t know about it. None of them know about it because it was during camp. So when you’re in football all you do is camp then we go home and sleep,” Piper said.

So far Piper loves being a SVSU Cardinal and doesn’t have any remorse over flying the coup.

“This is my dream school. It’s a lot of people, but small class sizes. So it’s perfect for me,” Piper said.
