“This is definitely the most media attention that I’ve ever received for baseball stuff,” Metzger said Tuesday. “This is definitely not the way I figured I would show up on SportsCenter.”
Metzger was ejected from Monday’s American Association baseball game against the Chicago Dogs at Newman Outdoor Field after arguing a called third strike with home plate umpire Mike Jarboe.
After he was ejected, Metzger raced into the home dugout, grabbed a red trash can and then returned to the playing field and planted the garbage can behind home plate. The RedHawks posted a video of the incident on their official Twitter account, a clip that was picked up by national outlets like ESPN, Bleacher Report and Barstool Sports.
“That wasn’t my intention,” said Metzger, who grew up in the San Diego area. “I woke up this morning and I had 50 text messages on my phone.”
Metzger served a one-game suspension due to the ejection, missing Tuesday’s game against Chicago at Newman Outdoor Field.
Los Angeles Lakers star LeBron James even took note of the popular video, leaving an emoji-filled comment below the posted video on ESPN SportsCenter’s Instagram account.

“I thought that was pretty cool,” Metzger said.
Metzger was initially upset about a called third strike when he started to jaw with Jarboe. Metzger said he told Jarboe, “You’re killing me,” and that led to Metzger getting tossed.
That’s when the fireworks started.
“That set me off pretty good,” Metzger said. “At that point I was like, ‘Well, I was going to get my money’s worth.’ … That’s pretty garbage of him to throw me out for that.
“I was walking my way back to the dugout and I was thinking that was trash for him to throw me out right there.”
Metzger said after the ejection is when he lost his cool and started to use profanity before he went to the dugout to get the garbage can. He said he was sorry for the language he used right after he was booted from the game.
“I feel bad for all those little kids in the stands who heard me swearing up a storm,” Metzger said.
As of Tuesday evening, the Metzger video ESPN posted on its SportsCenter Twitter account had received more than 1.5 million views. Metzger is batting .311 with 22 doubles, eight home runs and 36 RBIs in 70 games with the RedHawks.
Metzger said he was receiving texts throughout the day on Tuesday about the video and was trying to catch up with replies as of early Tuesday evening.
The RedHawks posted an image of the red trash can on their official Instagram account Tuesday with the comment: “Rest assured, the garbage can is just fine.”
“Everybody has been loving it I guess,” Metzger said. “Some said that was one of the funniest things I have seen in a long time. At least that negative situation brought some comedic relief.”
