The ongoing Zach Smith situation, and Urban Meyer’s response (or lack thereof), has people digging up old interviews and quotes from 2015. The day after the alleged October 25 incident between Smith and his ex-wife, Meyer had some interesting things to say about Jameis Winston.
That fall, Meyer was interviewed by former FOX News host Bill O’Reilly on The O’Reilly Factor. The discussion came in the wake of the Jameis Winston crab legs incident.
The Ohio State coach said that “it would have been hard” to let the crab legs theft go.
At the time, Sporting News noted that it was an interesting stance for Meyer to take, given some of the things that went on during his time as head coach of Florida.
Meyer’s comments were surprising, considering during his time at Florida he had at 31 players arrested and all kinds of player behavior issues. One of the players, Aaron Hernandez, got into a slew of trouble when he was involved in an altercation outside a bar during his freshman year, was questioned about the shooting of two men, and failed multiple drug tests.
Out of all those incidents, he was suspended only one game for a failed marijuana test. Hernandez, of course, found far more serious trouble after moving on to the NFL.
Stealing crab legs was far from the most serious thing that Winston was accused of while at Florida State, of course. It was also much less serious than what Smith had allegedly done to his soon-to-be-ex-wife on October 25.
As The Athletic’s Aaron Torres points out, the interview was conducted on October 26, one day after the Zach Smith incident.
This is wild: One day after the alleged domestic incident, that Urban Meyer allegedly knew about (Oct. 25, 2015), Meyer went on Bill O’Reilly’s show and said that he’d have trouble keeping Jameis Winston on his team after Winston stole crab legs. ONE DAY https://t.co/M5KDxeN3Eb

That afternoon, Courtney Smith filed a police report against the Ohio State wide receivers coach.
Now, it is unclear if Meyer was aware of the incident at the time that he went on with O’Reilly, who has since been fired after being accused of sexual harassment by fellow employees. He has admitted to knowing about the 2009 incident between the Smiths, though.
It may be a sick coincidence, but once again, it is a bad look for the Ohio State head coach.
