Washington Capitals star Alex Ovechkin announces birth of his first child, Sergei

The great year for Washington Capitals star Alex Ovechkin continues.

The Capitals captain and his wife, Anastasia Shubskaya, welcomed their first child, Sergei Aleksandrovich Ovechkin, on Saturday. The proud dad announced the news on Instagram, and the Capitals tweeted the news. According to The Washington Post, Sergei was born in South Florida.

"Thank you my girl for the most beautiful day in my life !!!," Ovechkin wrote to his wife in his Instagram post.

Sergei is the name of Ovechkin's late brother. Plus, the birthday, 8/18/2018, is appropriate for baby Sergei, since his father wears No. 8 and is nicknamed the "Great Eight."

Ovechkin won the first Stanley Cup of his career on June 7. He also won the Conn Smythe Trophy as playoff MVP after scoring 15 playoff goals. But Ovechkin had even happier news the night he won the Cup, as he revealed that he and his wife were expecting their first child.

He had a busy summer, celebrating with the Stanley Cup in the Washington area, Las Vegas and at the World Cup in Russia.

Sergei will be eligible for the NHL draft in 2036.
