An Attorney for the family of the late Botham Jean has said that the last words of the deceased are believed to have been ‘Oh my god, why did you do that?’
Attorney Lee Merritt was quoted by CBS News Wednesday as making the disclosure.
According to a CBS report, Merritt said two witnesses revealed details that contradict the claims made by Dallas Police Officer, Amber Guyger.
Guyger fatally shot Jean in his own apartment Thursday night.
According to an arrest warrant, Guyger said she went to what she thought was her own apartment.
She said the door was “ajar” and she saw a “large silhouette” inside. After giving “verbal commands that were ignored,” she fired her gun, hitting Jean.
But according to local news reports, Merritt said two witnesses heard knocking down the hallway followed by a woman’s voice that they believed to be officer Guyger saying, ‘Let me in. Let me in.’
The family’s attorneys said one witness then heard gunshots followed by a man’s voice.
“What we believe to be the last words of Botham Jean which was ‘Oh my god, why did you do that?'” Merritt said.
Amber Guyger has been charged with manslaughter in the death of 26-year-old Botham Jean.
The incident has made headlines internationally.
There were more protests in Dallas Wednesday over the fatal shooting, with reports that demonstrators shut down a City Council meeting.
Allison Jean, the mother of the deceased, said in a CBS television interview that one of the things she would like is for Amber Guyger “to just come clean.”
Jean called on the Dallas cop to “just surrender.”
At a vigil here Tuesday night on the La Clery playing field to remember Botham Jean, his uncle, Irenius Jean, expressed the view that the slaying of his nephew should change the trend of such killings in the United States.
Prime Minister, Allen Chastanet, who took time off from a vacation in the United States to fly to Dallas to support the Jean family and meet with officials there, on his official Facebook page described Botham Jean’s death as ‘senseless’.
“While nothing can reverse the tragic outcome of last week’s event, our sincere hope is that the justice system will move swiftly and faithfully to investigate the circumstances surrounding Botham’s senseless death,” Chastanet wrote.
