“Today you are You, that is truer than true. There is no one alive who is Youer than You.” ― Dr. Seuss, Happy Birthday to You!
“A Wasn’t just isn’t. He just isn’t present. But you… You ARE YOU! And, now isn’t that pleasant!” ― Dr. Seuss, Happy Birthday to You!
It happens to be my birthday. The reading of Dr. Seuss’s Happy Birthday to You! was a sometime tradition growing up. My father would do the reading, between dinner and cake, with great enjoyment and energy. How could he not? Seuss has such joy of life, and such respect for people’s humanity.
I have related in the past that our family somehow got a taste for German(ish) fare. While the birthday boy or girl had the right to name the meal, we largely converged on wiener schnitzel with mashed potatoes and lots of the schnitzel gravy. A three-layer German chocolate cake tended to be the vehicle for the growing number of candles. Since Christmas is “Baby Jesus’ Birthday,” guess what the main course tended to be? No, no birthday cake.
I recently got a CT scan and a bunch of bloodwork after not seeing my primary care doctor for over two years. When we met for the results, he pronounced me ridiculously healthy. Nothing on the scan and good values on all the bloodwork. Heck, even the cholesterol and blood pressure are good in a family with history of both. To what do I attribute me being me? God’s grace, good parents (both nature and nurture), and moderation in all things.
Finally, a relevant musical quotation this year, part of the soundtrack of my young adulthood:
At this point in life, Toby Keith is right:
Thankful, I don’t have Merle Haggard’s lament:
