Viral tweet brings attention to lack of parking at UTRGV

A continuing issue for UTRGV students now has them sharing their frustration online.

A continuing issue for University of Texas Rio Grande Valley students now has them sharing their frustration online.

Roy Gonzalez, a UTRGV student, shared a skit that has gone viral amongst students, showing their day-to-day frustrations.

"Yup, that’s me and I just got a $30 parking violation for parking in the wrong zone," Roy said right at the top off his video.

Roy says he made the video to highlight the parking dilemma at UTRGV.

"I don't think anybody that makes a viral video knows it’s going to spark, but I hoped it would. I didn’t know it was going to, but I’m glad it did,” said Roy Gonzalez.

The UTRGV student's video has gotten more than 80,000 views on Twitter, getting the attention from students and the university who recognizes the issue.

"We added 250 spots, new zone 2 spots in Edinburg this semester. So, the biggest thing we are trying to do is locate areas, come up with plans and further expand parking as we move forward," said UTRGV spokesperson Patrick Gonzales.

Roy mentions that zone 3, which is for faculty, mostly, always has open spots — compared to zone 1 and 2, which are for students.

"Redrawing the zones could possibly fix things. Zone 3 gets way more parking than they need," said Roy. "In my video, you see tons and tons of empty spots, and in zone 2, you see tons and tons of taken spots."

According to the university, they have sold 2 permits per 1 space in zone 3, which is the standard in all parking lots.

They also say cross-parking is allowed for the students who have zone 2 during peak hours.

"When we get the data and we think a distribution of the zones is necessary, then we will do that, but we cant just base that off of one day," said Patrick Gonzales.

As for Roy, he says he might not have suggestions for the university, but says the issue with parking isn’t going anywhere.

The university is creating a task force, which includes students, faculty and staff to try to combat the issue and bring a resolution to the parking problem.
