In case you didn’t know, Zendaya is starring in the soon-to-be-released animated film Smallfoot as a character named Meechee — now, that role has been immortalized in a new viral video from YouTuber and former Viner Gabriel Gundacker, titled “Zendaya is Meechee.”
In the fifty-second earworm, Gabriel simply sings the names of the cast members, and somehow we already have it stuck in our heads: “Zendaya is Meechee, LeBron James is Gwangi, Danny DeVito is Dorgle, Common is Stonekeeper and Gina Rodriguez is Kolka.”
But perhaps the most important legacy of the song is that it has reminded everyone of the correct pronunciation of Zendaya’s name: Zen-DAY-uh. The actor saw the clip circulating and even chimed in, saying, “Sang my name right and everything 😂😂😂.”
Zendaya stans picked up on her sneaking in a quick pronunciation lesson. One wrote, “I’m going to have ‘zan-DAY-a is meechee’ stuck in my head all day.” Another added, “...now that it's gone viral more people will learn how to pronounce Zendaya properly.”
The moment isn’t the first time Zendaya has addressed how to say her name, but apparently people are still having trouble. Back in 2017, she explained step-by-step how to pronounce it in a video: "Zen is the first syllable, then day, and then a."
“I think a lot of people see my name and think it's more fancy than it is," she explained at the time. "They think Zendaya like papaya. It's just day."
We’re kind of sorry that you’ll have "Zendaya is Meechee" stuck in your head for the foreseeable future, but hey, at least you’re saying her name right.
Smallfoot releases in theaters nationwide on Friday, Sept. 28. Until then, “Zendaya is Meechee…”
