GRAND RAPIDS, MI -- A Grand Rapids freelance photographer who took a viral photo of a man's clifftop proposal has located the couple after a 10-day search.
Matt Dippel announced Saturday, Oct. 27 that he he had found the couple after asking social media users for help on Oct. 17.
"I wish I was able to meet you in person and hug you. I'm glad I finally found you to share this special moment with you, thanks for being so awesome, maybe one day we will finally meet in person!" Dippel wrote in a Facebook post.
He was at Taft Point at Yosemite National Park on a road trip with a friend when he saw the special moment happening from afar and managed to capture it.
After snapping the picture, he went to the overlook where the proposal happened and asked if others there knew them. He found no one who did.
Back in Michigan, he posted the photo and a message: "Alright Internet I need your help. Help me find these two."
He identified them Saturday as Charlie Bear and his fiancee, Melissa.
Dippel said that Bear's brother saw a report about the photo and then contacted him via Instagram. He determined they were the right couple because time stamps on iPhone photos taken by them matched the time he took his photo.
"Lo and behold, I had found the mystery couple I've been looking for for so long," he said.
The couple had been in New York and had not seen reports about the viral photo.
"They had been traveling and out of contact with the word," he said.
Since Thursday, Dippel has talked personally with Charlie Bear and is working with a company called SmugMug to provide a metal print of the photo to the couple.
"They were very happy. They had no idea the whole Internet was looking for them," he said.
In his Facebook post, Dippel said he learned the clifftop proposal was actually the second one from Charlie Bear to his fiancee, but it was the "official" and more special one.
