A Florida prep school CEO’s profanity-laced tirade went viral on the Internet on Wednesday and has drawn swift and widespread condemnation from across the basketball landscape.
In an explicit audio file posted on YouTube on Tuesday, Mike Woodbury, CEO of Nation Christian Academy in Port St. Lucie, Fla., who admitted to The Stadium’s Jeff Goodman that it is his voice on the tape, threatened to ruin at least one of his basketball players’ lives.
Warning: The clip contains explicit language.
“I control transcripts. I control where you go next. It could be back to Haiti, motherf-----. That’s how easy it is for me,” Woodbury says.
In the more than three-minute clip, Woodbury calls the player or players “fake f----” and “retarded.”
“I’m going to take everything from you and let it be known, I’m saying it out loud,” Woodbury said, apparently arguing about a piece of information one of the players obtained. “Take one of your friends and have them look up extortion for you and if you need some help spelling it, maybe Simon can put it on f---ing wordchat. Stop talking. I’m a bad mother-f-----. You’ve crossed me for the last time.”
Goodman talked with both Woodbury and one of the players, Marvens Petion, after the audio was posted. Each leveled allegations against the other.
Petion said he left the school two days after the taped conversation. The audio was posted on the same day Petion told Goodman he got his transcript from the school, showing “a 1.4 grade point average.” The school later corrected it to a “B” average, saying there was “an error in calculation.”
Regardless of the circumstances, condemnation of Woodbury rang out on Twitter on Wednesday.
“Sickening,” former Kentucky player Rex Chapman tweeted. “Please pay attention to the people ‘coaching’ your kids. This is Nation Christian Academy Head Basketball Coach Mike Woodbury reacting to a player transferring. He was recorded. This is not coaching. Or teaching.”
“Been getting tons of texts/calls from college coaches about this prep school CEO, Mike ‘Woody’ Woodbury. Pretty much everyone saying the same thing: ‘This guy is nuts,’” tweeted Goodman.
Woodbury later issued a statement via Twitter.
