Rodney Berget made a joke as part of his final statements before he was executed Monday night, witnesses say.
Berget, who was executed at 7:37 p.m. Monday after a five-hour delay while the U.S. Supreme Court ruled on an appeal, never told assembled witnesses that he was sorry for murdering prison guard R.J. Johnson in 2011.

"At the very beginning, the first thing he said was, "sorry for the delay, I got caught in traffic," witness Don Jorgensen told members of the media.
He then told a couple of specific people that he loved them and said, "I'll meet you out there," witness Dani Ferguson recalls.
At one point while his arm was held down, Berget appeared to be holding two of his fingers like a peace sign, the witnesses say.
Berget took a couple of deep breaths and sounded like he groaned twice, the media witnesses said. Then he drifted off and let off snoring sounds until he stopped breathing.
