A steer from Australia is proving to be larger than life after going viral on social media and news websites around the globe because of its enormous stature.
Knickers, a seven year old Holstein steer, was first featured in a story by the Australian Broadcasting Network on Oct. 29. A month later the story of the behemoth of a steer drew international attention when news outlets like the Associated Press, Time, Huffington Post, USA Today, The Telegram and The Today Show all ran headlines about the beefy bovine.
The steer is believed to be the largest bovine in Australia at 6 foot 4 inches, while weighing more than 3,000 lb. Knickers is owned by Geoff Pearson of Lake Preston, Western Australia, a farmer who grazes cattle on a 3,000 acre property that appears to be the equivalent of a stocker operation in the U.S.
“He was too big to go into the export plant’s chain,” Pearson says of the steer not making it to a packing plant. “We have a high turnover of cattle and he was lucky enough to stay behind.”
The giant Holstein was purchased for USD$292 (AUS$400) at a local auction yard, likely when the steer was less than a year old. The name Knickers came about because the steer had a Brahman companion aptly named Bra.
Knickers unofficially comes in at 1.5 inches (4 cm) taller than a Guernsey steer in South Australia known as Big Moo. Both are still several inches shorter than Bellino, recognized as the World’s Tallest Steer by the Guinness World Records after measuring 6 feet 7 inches at the withers. Bellino, a Chianina steer from Italy, was officially measured at the Lo Show dei Record in Rome, Italy, on March27, 2010.
Today, Knickers spends his time grazing pastures with Wagyu steers while standing out in the herd and on the Internet. After all of the news stories started to be released social media had a frenzy of posts related to Knickers. A Facebook video post from Today Tonight in Australia has nearly 2 million views, while “Holy Cow” was a phrase found in a number of Twitter posts related to Knickers. Here is a sampling of what can be found related to the giant steer:
