PROSPECT, Ohio (WSYX/WTTE) - Dressing up on Halloween is fun for every kid. But this year, it’s extra special for 5-year-old Blake Mompher. Blake gets to be a school bus.
Blake’s custom school bus costume fits right over his wheelchair. His Grandpa made it.
“He’s always really liked school buses,” said Megan Mompher, Blake’s mom.
His love for school buses may have been the inspiration. But Blake’s smile while wearing his costume became a sensation.
His picture quickly went viral.
“Every day, I was just getting messages in my inbox of people asking to share his story and it was just endless,” said Megan Mompher. “It kept going.”
Blake showed up on every major news outlet, reaching all over the world.
“We never expected this to go as viral as it has, but it’s just been so exciting,” said Mompher.
The attention has been totally unexpected and a lot of fun. It’s come at a time when their family needed it the most, before Blake’s next big health challenge.
He will undergo bladder reconstruction at Nationwide Children’s Hospital on November 12th.
Blake was born with Spina Bifida, which occurs when the spine and spinal cord don’t form correctly according to the Mayo Clinic.
He has battled through surgery after surgery, starting the day after he was born.
“He’s had lots of medical trials in his life, but he’s always come through stronger each time,” said Megan Mompher.
As they get closer to surgery day, the Mompher family chooses joy in this journey.
“We have a strong faith and we know there’s a God that’s bigger than Spina Bifida and bigger than all this,” said Mompher.
