Bradley Cooper has spoken before about the lengths he took to ensure authenticity on the set of his A Star Is Born remake—recycling stories from his cast’s past for the script; performing his concert scenes on the stage of actual music festivals; casting friends to star opposite one another; and insisting on sitting close to each of his actors while directing their scenes, rather than bark orders from a distance. And in a new featurette, exclusive to Vanity Fair, audience members can take a peek behind the scenes of the making of the film.
Between shots of Cooper and the cast around a table for a script read, Dave Chappelle and Sam Elliott share how the first-time director created a safe artistic space unlike any they had previously encountered. “I’m crazy about the way Bradley would create an environment that gave me the courage to be vulnerable in a way comedy wouldn’t let me be,” said Chappelle, who played the best friend of Cooper’s character. Elliott, who has been acting for 50 years, said that he tapped into new emotions while filming one of his most grueling scenes—in which his and Cooper’s character get into a physical argument about their relationship and family. “It got really emotional,” said Elliott. “I went somewhere where I had never gone as an actor before.”
The key, said Cooper, was his actors drawing from their own emotions. Said the filmmaker, “We took all the darkness and all the drudge that is in us and we were able to do something with it and rise to another place of telling a story.”
