Amar Singh, the first Indian to hit a Test fifty, was born today in 1910 - India Today

Amar Singh was born on December 4 in 1910 in Rajkot, Gujarat.

Amar was part the CK Nayudu-led India team in their first-ever Test match when they travelled to England in 1932.

In India's debut Test, Amar bowled the opening spell with Mohammad Nisar and played an instrumental role in helping the team bowl England out for 259 at the Lord's in London. He picked up two wickets.

In England's second innings, Amar bagged two wickets once again to finish with a match haul of 4/159.

Chasing an improbable 346 for a win, India crumbled under pressure but Amar proved his worth as a handy batsman. He, in fact, scored a blazing half-century and in the process became the first Indian to hit a fifty.

Interestingly, Amar was also the first Indian to hit a six when he sent one out of the park during his 51-run innings in that game.

However, eight years after making debut, tragedy struck as Amar died on May 21 in 1940 from pneumonia at his residence in Jamnagar. He was aged 29.

England great Wally Hammond, who had faced Amar Singh in the 1932 Test match, once praised the Indian paceman. "As dangerous an opening bowler as I have ever seen, coming off the pitch like the crack of doom," Hammond had said.

Another England legend Len Hutton termed the Indian pacer as the best he had faced. "There is no better bowler in the world today than Amar Singh," Hutton was quoted as saying in 1970.

Amar had established himself as a genuine all-rounder. He played 7 Tests and picked up 28 wickets, with the best of 7/86.
