Babies born now will live to 22nd century - The Times

Irish babies born today are the first who can officially expect to see the 22nd century, according to Unicef.

Life expectancy for Irish children born today will be 82, which would take them to 2101. Ireland is one of 28 countries where children born this year can be expected to live past 2100.

Those in Italy, Spain, Switzerland, Japan and Singapore had the longest life expectancy, with children born today expected to live until 2103.

Peter Power, Unicef’s executive director for Ireland, said: “This is the first year ever we can say that the 175 children expected to be born in Ireland on January 1 can reasonably expect to live into the next century — that’s an amazing thing to say.”
