BEDFORD, Va. (WSET) -- A video of a local retired police sergeant's final day on the job is receiving a lot of attention on social media with more than 60,000 views!
Robert Monk retired from the Bedford Police Department Friday November 30th as a patrol sergeant after almost 22 years of service.
He also worked for the Bedford County Sheriff's Office for four years before he started his career at the police department.
As Monk was making his final dispatch call, his son Tyler was on the other end of the radio to congratulate him on his service.
"To whoever's listening it is my honor and my sincere pleasure to say that 18-57, my dad, Sergeant Robert Monk, badge radio number PD-5 in the town of Bedford, is clocking out with his final 10-42 of his career," Tyler Monk said on the radio during his father's final call.
Tyler shared how special his dad and continued, "It is time to come home pops. You've done great things in your stint here and touched so many lives and to the officers that worked with my dad, thank you to each and every one of you. My dad appreciates you all."
Monk's daughter, Briana, was behind the camera recording the video that went viral.
"We knew that it meant a lot to do something special for him on his last day," Briana said.
Tyler had traveled back home from James Madison University to be there for his dad's last day on the force.
"I was just honored that he asked me to do it and not one of his predecessors or my sister even," Tyler said.
Bedford Police Chief Todd Foreman stated how much he appreciated Monk's had work and dedication to the Bedford community.
"[He] served as school resource officer, investigator, patrolman, patrol sergeant, so he's worked in a lot of different roles for us and served this community in a lot of ways," Chief Foreman said.
Monk thanked everyone over the radio for their support, and said goodbye.
"Thank you everyone, take care and watch everybody's six. PD-5 10-42."
Even though Monk retired Friday, he said he could possibly still return to law enforcement at some point in the future, but in a different capacity.
