Chances are by now, you’ve seen one of the many videos of superintendents singing the snow-day news to their students.
The Benzie Central Superintendent made one Tuesday that took the internet by storm.
It all started when Benzie Central Superintendent Matt Olson saw a video of Schwartz Creek School leaders using the famous chords of Leonard Cohen’s Hallelujah to announce a snow day.
“I thought about it prior to that but when they did that, it was kind of game on. I had a whole bunch of people tag me on Facebook that day, saying do it, do it, do it and so I said all right, gauntlets down, I’ll do it,” said Olson.
The one time acapella Doo-Wop group member went back to his roots.
“Singing was always a big part of my life so I joined this Acapella Doo-Wop group. The first song that we sang together was Longest Time, and I sang lead so it’s kind of one of my original songs. So I was trying to think of what to do for the snow day and I kind of went back to my roots and I thought, we haven’t had school in the longest time,” explained Olson.
“Our snow day message the day before garnered 8,000 reaches on Facebook which is huge for us, we’re a district of about 1,400 kids, a county of about 17,000 people. I was thinking it would be really cool if we could break 10,000,” said Olson.
Olson’s snow day announcement blew past that, with more than 200,000 views.
Other schools joined in too like Houghton Lake, and Cherryland Middle School in Elk Rapids.
“I was just thrilled quite honestly because it’s a great shot in the arm for our district, it brought out a lot of community pride, school pride, people talking about oh, I used to go to Benzie, a lot of alumni were posting it and cheers for the hometown,” said Olson.
