Born to chase: MS Dhoni leaves fans awestruck after MCG masterclass - India Today

Brief Scores: India (234/3; Dhoni 87*, Jadhav 61*) beat Australia (230; Chahal 6 for 42) by 7 wickets to win ODI series 2-1. Full Scorecard

India couldn't have asked for a better start to the World Cup year. Virat Kohli's men clinched history in Australia by becoming the first team from the Asian country to win a bilateral series in Australia.

More importantly, India's much-celebrated finisher, MS Dhoni found form and eventually went on to win the Man of the Series for three consecutive fifties, including the match-winning and unbeaten 87 in the series decider at the Melbourne Cricket Ground on Friday.

MS Dhoni finished the series as the highest Indian run-scorer with 193 from three matches. He was second on the list of most runs in the ODI series, finishing behind Shaun Marsh, who scored 224 runs.

Incidentally, Dhoni had not scored a fifty from 20 ODIs in 2018. However, the World Cup-winning former captain has begun 2019 on a high with three fifties on the trot - fifth time in his career he has achieved the feat.

After managing to help India cross the finish line in both Adelaide and Melbourne, Dhoni also took his average in successful chases for India to 103.07 (2783 runs in 73 innings). Captain Virat Kohli is second on that list with an average of 97.98 after having scored 4899 runs in 78 innings that ended up as successful run chases.

There was considerable criticism around MS Dhoni in the lead up to the ODI series in Australia. The wicketkeeper-batsman had skipped domestic duties and had headed into the three-match rubber with limited match practice as he was rested for the T20I series against the West Indies at home and Australia before the Test series.

Nonetheless, Dhoni has proved he is still a vital cog in this Indian set up in the lead up to the biggest cricketing event of the year in England, starting May 30.
