PARK HILLS, Ky. (WKRC) - Students returned to Covington Catholic High School Wednesday amid a heavy police presence. Threats had been directed at the school since a controversial video became viral.
The short clip, widely shared from a Twitter account that has now been deactivated, made it appear that students from the school were blocking the path of Native American elder Nathan Phillips while mocking him in Washington, D.C.
Longer video was later made available that showed the students were the target of some derogatory comments from another group there called the Black Hebrew Israelites. That group had already had some back-and-forth with the Native Americans there for the Indigenous People's rally.
That video also showed that Phillips walked up to the students and was not blocked. Nick Sandmann released a statement which read in part, "I never interacted with this protester. I did not speak to him. I did not make any hand gestures or other aggressive moves. To be honest, I was startled and confused as to why he had approached me. We had already been yelled at by another group of protesters, and when the second group approached I was worried that a situation was getting out of control where adults were attempting to provoke teenagers."
School officials canceled classes Tuesday on what would have been the first day back for the students since the events in Washington, D.C.
Principal Bob Rowe said administrators met with state and local law enforcement and the Department of Homeland Security. They said police will be inside and outside of the school before, during and after classes. They'll also be there for all evening activities.
