Syracuse University student Claire Cottrill hasn't released a full-length album yet, but she's already headed for one of the biggest music stages in America.
The 20-year-old indie pop singer, who records as Clairo, will perform at the 2019 Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival, held over two weekends in April in Indio, California. She'll be sharing the bill with today's trendiest artists like Ariana Grande, Childish Gambino, Tame Impala, Janelle Monae, Solange, Khalid, The 1975, Diplo, Kid Cudi, Weezer, Bad Bunny, J Balvin, Bassnectar, Pusha T, and Kacey Musgraves.
According to The Boston Globe, Clairo first rose to fame when her 2017 single "Pretty Girl" went viral on YouTube, picking up more than 25 million views just before she started college at SU. The charming, DIY video shows the Carlilse, Massachusetts native as an awkward teenager in her bedroom singing into her laptop about how she "could be a pretty girl [and] lose myself in you."
Clairo started building on her success with small shows, including farmers' markets and house parties around the Syracuse campus, and releasing several other songs like "Flamin' Hot Cheetos," "Heaven" and "4EVER." She began performing for bigger crowds, opening for artists like Tyler, the Creator and Dua Lipa, and this year there'll be more than 100,000 people who can hear her at Coachella -- or potentially millions more from online streams.
"It feels insane," she told the Globe. "Around this time last year, I was playing shows with friends from Syracuse and going to class every day. I had no idea just how much my life would change in the coming year. I'm forever grateful that so many people have connected with the music that I've put out, and it's an honor to be able to play Coachella this year. Growing up, I only dreamt of playing alongside some of the names on the lineup this year."
The Ringer reports Clairo has also been signed by Chance the Rapper's manager, has a 12-song deal with The Fader's record label, and been featured on music publications like Pitchfork and Rookie Magazine. She also makes mixes as DJ Baby Benz and "Drown," her collaboration with Cuco, was named one of the 65 best songs of 2018 by The New York Times.
