Teens in MLK Day Viral Video Altercation With Man Yelling Racial Slurs to File Lawsuit - NBC 6 South Florida

What to Know

  • The viral video surfaced showing the teens were participating in a Bikes Up, Guns Down event along Brickell Avenue on Monday.

Civil rights attorneys representing a group of teens seen in cell phone video where a man pulled out a weapon and began yelling racial slurs at them during a Monday event in Miami intend to file a lawsuit against that man as well as the woman they were initially confronted by.

The viral video surfaced showing the teens were participating in a Bikes Up, Guns Down event along Brickell Avenue during the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. holiday. The group of teens from Liberty Square stopped their bicycles and wouldn’t let traffic pass, saying they were protesting to prevent a public housing complex from being torn down.

The ensuing altercation, captured on video by a member of the group Dream Defenders, showed a driver named Dana Scallione getting out of a car and telling them to move before alleging they ran over her foot.

"You just touched me, you bunch of thugs," she screams.

Moments later, a man identified as Mark Allen Bartlett is seen walking up with a gun at his side yelling racial epithets. The Hollywood man was arrested for having a loaded gun without a permit.

Scallione has since been fired from her job at a local real estate company as the Miami-Dade State Attorney’s Office is looking into the video to determine whether or not to add a hate crime charge.
