The teenager at the center of an incident last month involving a viral video of him and Native American Nathan Phillips is suing The Washington Post.
WJLA.com reports lawyers for Nicholas Sandmann are suing the newspaper for $250 million for engaging in a “modern-day form of McCarthyism.”
The viral video shows Sandmann, wearing a "Make America Great Again" hat, standing in front of Phillips while Sandmann's class group from Kentucky was in Washington, D.C. as part of the March for Life rally. Initially, Sandmann was described as mocking Phillips but more detailed video seemed to show Phillips approaching the class group on his own.
Phillips said he was trying to diffuse tensions between Hebrew Israelites and the class group.
Sandmann claims the newspaper “recklessly rushed to publish its false and defamatory accusations in order to advance its own political agenda against President Trump.”
“We are reviewing a copy of the lawsuit and we plan to mount a vigorous defense,” said Kristine Coratti Kelly, the Washington Post’s vice president of communications, to WJLA.
