The Oakland Raiders' first season under returning head coach Jon Gruden did not go as planned. After trading Khalil Mack and Amari Cooper, the Raiders finished with a 4-12 record.
With the team holding the Nos. 4, 24 and 27 overall picks in the first round, Gruden certainly has the opportunity to hand pick his guys to build around.
However, Gruden recently teased at the chance of trading one of those first-round picks, and yes, that even includes the No. 4 selection.
"I think there's a lot of potential for trades," Gruden told J.T. the Brick on 'The Game Plan' podcast. "I think that's one of the things I'm really excited about. [New Raiders general manager] Mike Mayock what he brings to the table, he's got great resources around the NFL. He's been in every building, he's on a first-name basis; everybody knows Mike. And I think he's gonna be on the phones quite a bit, not only with those two picks you talked about, who knows, we may move up with the No. 4 pick, we may move back with that pick. We'll see how it all unfolds."
Statements like the one Gruden made are nothing new. In the lead-up to the NFL Draft, there's always plenty of smokescreens.
Despite this wild claim, Gruden stressed that the first step in the offseason is to study the free agent market. With needs on both sides of the ball, Oakland has over $71 million in cap space to address them. If those vacancies aren't filled, that's where the draft comes in.
If last season proved anything to NFL fans and media pundits, it's that Jon Gruden is not afraid to make trades.
Would we even doubt that he manages to trade quarterback Derek Carr and draft Heisman winner Kyler Murray? No, no we wouldn't.
