Washington Nationals place Trevor Rosenthal on 10-Day IL with “viral infection” - Federal Baseball

Washington Nationals’ manager Davey Martinez talked, after another rough outing by Nats’ reliever Trevor Rosenthal, about the need to get together with the right-hander and talk to him about exactly what was going on.

“He just doesn’t look right right now,” Martinez said, “so we’ve got to figure something out. I know we need him, but we’ve got to figure out what’s going on and get him right.”

Asked if he thought it was something physical troubling Rosenthal, who underwent Tommy John surgery in 2017, worked his way back, signed with the Nationals in November of 2018, and has struggled out of the gate, the manager said he would have to talk to him and see.

“I’ve got to really sit down and talk to him and see what’s going on,” Martinez said.

“I’m not going to make assumptions, and we’ll go from there, but we need him. He hasn’t pitched in a week. We were hoping that he could keep the game right there.”

Rosenthal took the mound with the Nationals trailing 6-3 in the series finale with the Rockies in Colorado’s Coors Field, and hit the first batter he faced, walked the second, threw three wild pitches, gave up three singles, and surrendered three runs to turn it into a 9-3 deficit.

“I feel good,” Rosenthal told reporters after the outing, as quoted by MASN’s Mark Zuckerman, “and I feel like I’m really close. It’s just getting over that hump.

“I think it’ll happen soon. It’s just a matter of continuing to get in there and keep working.”

Before the start of tonight’s series opener with the San Diego Padres in the nation’s capital, however, Nationals’ GM Mike Rizzo said that Rosenthal had been dealing with an illness on the road trip.

Not long after Rizzo spoke to reporters, the Nationals announced that Rosenthal was being placed on the 10-Day Injured List with what was described as a “viral infection”, and reliever Justin Miller was being reinstated after he’d gone on the IL with a “lower back strain” back on April 13th.

Rosenthal, who signed a 1-year/$7M deal with the Nationals this winter, has a 36.00 ERA, a 13.11 FIP, nine walks, and three Ks in seven appearances and three innings pitched thus far this season.
