Prince Harry gave an adorable speech. Here's how other royal dads celebrated their babies - USA TODAY

As if there were a doubt that Prince Harry would break the royal dad mold, it was obliterated when he stepped in front of cameras Monday and gushed over the birth of his son.

"It’s been the most amazing experience I could ever have possibly imagined," he said.

With his giddy, hand-rubbing media announcement, Harry has already responded differently than his father and grandfather to the births of their first sons.

Modern royal dads

Prince Harry was at Duchess Meghan's side during the birth.

"I haven’t been at many births. This is definitely my first birth. It was amazing. … I’m so incredibly proud of my wife. As every father and parent would ever say, your baby is absolutely amazing. This little thing is absolutely to die for. So I’m just over the moon."

We don't yet know where the baby was born. Speculation is Meghan may have had her son at home at Frogmore Cottage, on the grounds of Windsor Castle.

Harry's brother, Prince William, also was present for the birth of his children with Duchess Kate of Cambridge. Prince George was born in July 2013, Princess Charlotte in May 2015 and Prince Louis in April 2018. William even tweeted the news of George's birth.

He didn't make tenderhearted speeches, but he did joke with the media and gave every indication of being a hands-on dad.

"He's got her looks, thankfully," said William of George.

He also said he had changed his first diaper.

Later at home, William and Kate sent out thank you notes and a family photo to ANYONE who sent their congrats (and included a return address) on the birth of George.

Their children were born at St. Mary's Hospital in London.

A further look back

William and Harry's father, Prince Charles, was in the delivery room with Princess Diana as she bucked tradition at a time when most royals gave birth inside Buckingham Palace. She gave birth at St. Mary's Hospital.

Charles said in a letter to his godmother, Patricia Brabourne, that he was glad he was there to see William born.

"I am so thankful I was beside Diana’s bedside the whole time because by the end of the day I really felt as though I’d shared deeply the process of birth and as a result was rewarded by seeing a small creature which belonged to us even though he seemed to belong to everyone else as well."

His sons announced that they would take some time to settle in. But Prince Charles organized a celebratory polo match and passed out champagne in plastic cups after the birth of Harry in September 1984, according to media reports.

Most royal fathers, and even regular dads for that matter, through the ages were not in the room with their wives.

Princess Elizabeth, now Queen Elizabeth II, gave birth to her first son, Charles, in Buckingham Palace in 1948 (and later Prince Andrew and Prince Edward). Princess Anne was born at Clarence House because damage caused during World War II demanded renovations to the palace.

At the time of Charles' birth, Prince Philip was off playing a game of squash with his private secretary.

At Elizabeth's request, Philip was in the room for the birth of Edward in 1964.
