Tomorrow we lay my mother-in-law to rest. Today we are distilling all the many memories to write our farewells for the funeral. July 6 would have been her 98th birthday. Her death should not have been a shock, but it was.
Saturday, all four of her children and their spouses, two of the nine grands, and two of the fourteen greats laughed and loved over dinner. It was not a special occasion. Rather it was a three day weekend when we could all travel. Even though we thought she would live to 105, there are limited opportunities to enjoy her wicked sense of humor and crackling conversation. Sunday morning, we were getting dressed to pick her up from her assisted living apartment for church when the call came. She had died peacefully in her sleep.
We got through Sunday on the strength of the goodness of Saturday evening and the memory of a woman who loved her family fiercely. May we all have such an end.
