"He is so charismatic, and yet he has those insecurities, he has those vulnerabilities, so, yes, he's a genius. What he does is unbelievable. It's almost athletic. It's like a feat," Howard said on "CBS This Morning." "But, he's relatable, so this is this really powerful combination."
The Grammy-winning director said Pavarotti experienced an illness as a child and it changed his outlook on life.
"He had a near-death experience as a child, which we go into in the documentary," Howard said on "CBS This Morning." "And, by the way, he tells a lot of his own story. We were able to find so many great interviews, including from his family ... it's raw and it's vulnerable and it's real, so we felt like this was a chance to tell a complete story — doesn't matter whether you know anything about him or opera — and yet use that music to help build the emotion. And also the other thing that he cared about was democratizing opera. And I thought using his story and opera to make a movie is hopefully extending that agenda."
Pavarotti remains one of the best-selling recording artists in music history with more than 100 million records sold. The Italian tenor entertained more than 10 million people in 60 countries, and he had the first classical album to reach No. 1 on the pop charts.
Between his "CBS This Morning" and "Today" interviews, Howard also talked about his favorite movies in his lengthy filmography, the legacy of his "Andy Griffith Show" character Opie Taylor, his memories of recently deceased Formula One racing legend Niki Lauda, whose career he chronicled in his movie "Rush," and more.
"Pavarotti" comes out in select theaters on June 7. Fathom Events will bring the film to more than 600 movie theaters nationwide for an exclusive screening at 7 p.m. local time Tuesday. Tuesday's event, which is the lead-up to the film’s North American theatrical release, will include a special introduction from Howard, in which he speaks to his unique role as director and personal connection to the project, according to a news release. The preview screening will be offered locally Tuesday night at AMC Quail Springs 24 and Tinseltown USA in Oklahoma City and the Regal Warren Theatre in Moore.
