The sheriff’s office released this statement on the matter Friday afternoon: Earlier today, Sheriff Jones and State Representative George Lang discussed the continuing epidemic of heroin-addicted women who are pregnant. While statutes exist for corrupting another with drugs, this statute is frequently used in cases involving the “giving” controlled substances to juveniles. Nothing in the Ohio Revised Code section for trafficking in drugs speaks to selling heroin to pregnant women. This continues to be a major problem that law enforcement deals with. Hopefully this discussion will create renewed dialogue and legislators may find additional ways to provide law enforcement tools to investigate and prosecute these offenders. We also hope that this continued conversation will draw attention to the larger picture of pregnant women who are incarcerated.
