To Do Today: 1954 Remake of A Star Is Born | BU Today - BU Today

Judy Garland classic returns to big screen tonight at Coolidge Corner Theatre

Last year’s Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper remake of A Star Is Born generated a lot of buzz, but the iconic story dates back to 1937, with a running total of four remakes. The second, released in 1954 and starring Judy Garland, will return to the big screen Monday night at the Coolidge Corner Theatre.

The story follows aspiring artist Esther Blodgett (Garland), who is discovered by movie star Norman Maine (James Mason). Maine takes Blodgett under his wing, and as her career blossoms, his begins to fall apart.

If you love musicals, this film is for you. It is the first version of A Star Is Born to incorporate music in the plot. In fact, there are scenes where Garland is singing and dancing for up to 10 minutes. It received six Oscar nominations, including Best Actress for Garland and Best Actor for Mason. The film revived Garland’s acting career following a four-year break because of mental health issues.

The historic, independent Coolidge Corner Theatre has something for everyone. If musicals and old classics aren’t your thing, watch for programming series that range from indie films to horror and camp movies in the Coolidge’s “After Midnite” screenings, as well as showings followed by discussions about underrepresented perspectives in film in the “Wide Lens” series.

A Star Is Born screens at the Coolidge Corner Theatre, 290 Harvard St., Brookline, at 7 pm Monday, June 10. Tickets are $13.25 and can be purchased online or at the door. Take an MBTA Green Line C trolley to Coolidge Corner.
