Georgia coach Kirby Smart delivered one of the lines of the day in the SEC with his response on how to beat Alabama, but former Crimson Tide tailback Damien Harris had his own funny response when Smart’s quote went viral.
Smart took a question during his SEC media days podium session about how Georgia can get over the edge against Alabama.
“Yeah, get rid of their backup quarterback, right?” Smart quipped. “That’s part of the plan.”
The comment comes in reference to the teams’ last two meetings. Jalen Hurts led Alabama on a comeback victory in last year’s SEC Championship Game. True freshman Tua Tagovailoa did the same against Georgia off the bench in the national title game.
Harris, a team captain and all-conference running back last season, zinged right back on social media.

Mac Jones projects to back up Tagovailoa this season. Jones does not have the same kind of hype as Tagovailoa or Hurts as an Alabama quarterback, but should be a reliable player when called upon by Nick Saban. He was a 247Sports Composite three-star recruit from Jacksonville (Fla.) The Bolles School.
As far as Smart’s comment, the inability of any former Saban assistant to beat Alabama so far is well known. Smart went on to provide a real answer about future potential battles between Alabama and Georgia. The two are projected winners of their divisions, which could mean for another SEC Championship clash.
“They do a tremendous job, and we haven’t finished the way we need to,” Smart said. “To be honest with you, a lot of that goes right here to me. We’ve got to do a better job finishing the game and stay on top of it.
“And they get some credit for that because they’ve got a good football program. They’ve won a lot of football games and they’re a physical team. What I think we’ve shown is that we can match that physicality. We haven’t finished that physicality, but we’re not getting shoved around out there, and that’s part of the deal against Alabama: You’ve got to be able to go out and play physical.”
Harris ended his Alabama career as a two-time national champion with 3,070 career rushing yards and 26 touchdowns. The New England Patriots selected Harris in the third round of the NFL Draft where he, ironically, joins a backfield that includes Georgia star Sony Michel.
"I don't think there is another group where you can watch each week and not know where the ball is going," said NFL analyst Nate Burleson. "Sony Michel, James White is fantastic, Rex Burkhead is fantastic. Damien Harris, he was Alabama's leading rusher last year. I think, maybe, the Buffalo Bills have a running back room where you don't know who's going to get the ball, but bigger names, older guys. When it comes to variety being the spice of life, you can't call it who is going to get the ball for this team."
