9/11 quotes: #NeverForget; Inspiration as we remember attacks of Sept. 11, 2001 - AL.com

Today marks the 18th anniversary of the attacks on America, a day that shocked the nation and the world.

On Sept. 11, 2001, hijackers took over planes and flew them into the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. Another plane, believed to be headed to the White House, was brought down by heroic passengers outside of Somerset County, Pennsylvania. In all, almost 3,000 people were killed and more than 6,000 injured in a morning of attacks.

The day marks the deadliest foreign attack on U.S. soil in American history.

Here’s a look at some of the most inspirational and patriotic quotes about 9/11:

“Even the smallest act of service, the simplest act of kindness, is a way to honor those we lost, a way to reclaim that spirit of unity that followed 9/11.” – President Barack Obama

“Today the images that people around the world equate with power and democracy are gone but ‘America’ is not an image it is a concept. That concept is only strengthened by our pulling together as a team. If you want to kill us, leave us alone because we will do it by ourselves. If you want to make us stronger, attack and we unite.” –- Adam Mayblum, World Trade Center survivor

“Remember the hours after September 11th when we came together as one to answer the attack against our homeland. We drew strength when our firefighters ran upstairs and risked their lives so that others might live; when rescuers rushed into smoke and fire at the Pentagon; when the men and women of Flight 93 sacrificed themselves to save our nation’s Capitol; when flags were hanging from front porches all across America, and strangers became friends. It was the worst day we have ever seen, but it brought out the best in all of us.” – Senator John Kerry

“If we learn nothing else from this tragedy, we learn that life is short and there is no time for hate.” - - Sandy Dahl, wife of Flight 93 pilot Jason Dahl, who died in Shanksville, Pennsylvania crash

“These acts of mass murder were intended to frighten our nation into chaos and retreat. But they have failed. Our country is strong. A great people has been moved to defend a great nation.” - Former President George W. Bush on Sept. 11, 2001.

“One of the worst days in America’s history saw some of the bravest acts in Americans’ history. We’ll always honor the heroes of 9/11. And here at this hallowed place, we pledge that we will never forget their sacrifice.” - - President George W. Bush speaking at Pentagon in 2008

“I will never forget seeing what hate can destroy… I will never forget seeing what love can heal…” - - Steve Maraboli

“Five years from the date of the attack that changed our world, we’ve come back to remember the valor of those we lost—those who innocently went to work that day and the brave souls who went in after them. We have also come to be ever mindful of the courage of those who grieve for them, and the light that still lives in their hearts.” - - New York City mayor Rudolph Giuliani in 2006

“September 11 is one of our worst days but it brought out the best in us. It unified us as a country and showed our charitable instincts and reminded us of what we stood for and stand for.” — Sen. Lamar Alexander

“With almost no time to decide, [your loved ones] gave the entire country an incalculable gift. They saved the Capitol from attack. They saved God knows how many lives. They saved the terrorists from claiming the symbolic victory of smashing the center of American government. … They allowed us to survive as a country that could fight terror and still maintain liberty and still welcome people from all over the world from every religion and race and culture as long as they shared our values, because ordinary people given no time at all to decide did the right thing.” - Former President Bill Clinton
